In the second Canon Lion City Cup match of the night, the boys from Eintracht took on PSV.
Both sides went close in the opening 15 minutes. PSV striker Matthias Verreth had a chance to put his side ahead but could not finish a cross from the right flank. Eintracht’s Emrah Tahirovic’s free-kick stung the palms of goalkeeper Mike van de Meulenhof.
Verreth finally put PSV in front in the 16 minute. Teammate Jaell Hattu showed good composure to spot Verreth in the box and played a perfectly weighted cross for the latter to head home.
Just two minutes later, Nils Herdt equalised for Eintracht with a fine header that had Meulenhof rooted to the spot. It was Herdt’s third goal of the tournament.
It was up to Meulenhof to keep his side in the contest as he tipped Ahmed Diack’s shot from distance over the bar.
Jaell Hattu’s runs through the middle were causing problems for the Eintracht defense. And it was from one of these runs that PSV’s second goal came from. After dribbling through the middle, PSV’s No.10 showed good vision to slip the ball to Verreth and the striker finished coolly. The first half ended with PSV leading 2-1.
In the second half, Eintracht coach Abdessamad brought on three players – Adrian Matuschewski, Lukas Rodwald and Marvin Diehl, who had previously made significant contributions in their group matches.
But it was the substitute from the other team, PSV’s Leandro Fernandes, who made the bigger impact. With his first touch, the midfielder attempted an audacious lob over Christian Seemann from outside the box but missed by inches.
It was second-time lucky for Leandro Fernandes as he finally managed to lob Seemann in the 74 minute.
With time running out for Eintracht, tensions flared and a flurry of incidents took place in the last five minutes of the match.
Firstly, Meulenhof produced another stunning save from a deflected shot. Then, Eintracht captain Francesco Petrovic was shown a second yellow card for simulation.
Lastly, through a sea of legs, defender Volkan Egri fired a low drive from outside the box which left Meulenhof with no chance.
The match ended 3-2 to PSV.
After the game, goal-scorer Leandro expressed hopes of starting for the final on Sunday.
“It feels amazing and gives me a boost for the final. I hope I will get a chance to play on Sunday as well.”
Having previously lost 2-0 to Corinthians in their first Group B game, PSV coach Edwin de Wijs said he was looking forward to playing against the South Americans in the final once more.
“We have a big game against Corinthians. I hope we can learn from our previous game against them. We don’t have to be afraid of them. We have to be able to play our own game and not pull back,” Edwin said.
The champions of the 25th Canon Lion City Cup will be crowned on Sunday, 16 June 2013 at 8:45pm at Jalan Besar Stadium.
