Arsenal (England), PSV (Netherlands), Eintracht Frankfurt e.V (Germany) and Sport Club Corinthians Paulista (Brazil) were officially unveiled as the participating teams for the 25th Canon Lion City Cup at a press conference at Canon Singapore’s office.
This year’s competition will be held from 8 to 16 June 2013 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in what promises to be yet another exciting campaign.
Having seen the likes of Juventus, AFC Ajax, CR Flamengo and Manchester City compete in previous editions, the line-up for this year will only serve to strengthen the Canon Lion City Cup’s standing as Singapore’s premier youth tournament.
“This is definitely a line-up that is worthy of a 25th anniversary. The diversity in the line-up will pose a good challenge for our young local football talents. This year, we have FIFA Club World Cup Champions Corinthians and also Arsenal, known for grooming some of the biggest football stars in the world,” said Mr R. Sasikumar, Managing Director of the Red Card Group.
He added, “The achievements of our young footballers coupled with the presence of big teams from past editions of the Canon Lion City Cup have made this a must-see competition. I am grateful to the teams for agreeing to be part of this year’s tournament. Canon and the Football Association of Singapore have supported us fully for the past two editions and I am thrilled to be able to celebrate the landmark of the 25th year together.”
Since 2011, Canon has been the title sponsor of the Lion City Cup. As part of its commitment to nurture young local sporting talents, Canon had sponsored two National Football Academy (NFA) players, Amer Nazri and Amirul Azmi to train with the prestigious AFC Ajax Academy. The 2-week training stint took place from 8 March 2013 onwards.
“We want to contribute to the community through various avenues, including the sports arena, and the Canon Lion City Cup has served as a fantastic platform as this is where many of our young local football talents are discovered and eventually groomed to represent Singapore,” said Mr Andrew Koh, General Manager of Consumer Business, Canon Singapore.
“Our boys have done Singapore proud by training with some of the top teams internationally. We are happy to be a part of this sporting journey to nurture our local talent. This year, in the 25th edition, we will continue to provide the most valuable players from both the NFA Under-15 and Under-16 teams with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to train with a football academy overseas.”
Over 4,000 people came out to the Jalan Besar Stadium last year to catch the 24th Canon Lion City Cup final encounter between the NFA Under-16 team and AFC Ajax. The 25th Canon Lion City Cup promises to be an even bigger hit with the fans.
“Singaporeans from all walks of life came out in full force to support our Cubs last June and we are sure that the love affair will continue with top youth football teams in action at this year’s 25th Canon Lion City Cup,” said Mr Zainudin Nordin, President of the Football Association of Singapore.
“I would like to thank Canon and Red Card for their commitment and utmost support in establishing the Canon Lion City Cup as the premier youth competition in this region. With the high level of quality of football expected from the various foreign teams, this year’s competition will continue to provide our bright young talents with the competitive and international match exposure required to facilitate their development, which is one of the key objectives spelt out in the Strategic Plan.”
